How To: Manually Eject a Stuck Disc in the PlayStation 4 Console

Manually Eject a Stuck Disc in the PlayStation 4 Console

You know how annoyed you get when you put a quarter into the vending or washing machine and it gets stuck? There's a quiet rage that boils inside you. Now, imagine that quarter is a sixty dollar video game, and it's stuck inside your brand new, four hundred dollar PlayStation 4 system.

There will probably never be a video gaming console that doesn't eat a disc every now and then, at least until they get rid of they optical drive altogether. Until then, expect your hungry PS4 to gorge itself on your precious DVDs, Blu-rays, and game discs.

Most of the people currently getting stuck discs are those who try to upgrade the select PS3 titles to PS4 versions, or who just see if they can play their PS3 games period. Well, there were plenty of ways to eject a stuck disc in the PS3, and there's already a few ways to do it on the PS4.

Method One: The Easy No-Take-Apart Way

This first method is going to be the first one you want to try, since it does not involve taking apart your PlayStation 4.

  1. Turn off your PS4 by holding the power button until the system shuts off completely.
  2. Unplug all of the cords that are connected to your PS4 from the system directly.
  3. Place the PS4 vertically. The disc usually gets stuck when the console is horizontally resting. Placing it vertically may help dislodge it.
  4. Wait about 30 minutes.
  5. Reconnect all of the cords.
  6. Boot into safe mode by holding the power button for 7 to 8 seconds.
  7. Cross your fingers. That's really it. The disc should hopefully eject now.

Method Two: The Take-Apart Way

This method will require you take take apart your PS4, and comes straight from Sony themselves, so it's doubtful it will void your warranty. Unlike the difficult procedures for the PS3, it's fairly easy.

Step 1: Remove the Shiny Cover

Use your hands to remove the shiny part of the PS4 cover. It should come off rather easily.

Step 2: Find the Screw

There is a small black screw located in-between the vents. You will see two sections of tightly packed slots and on single slot somewhat separated. This is where the screw is located.

Step 3: Rotate Counter-Clockwise

Use a Phillips screwdriver and rotate the screw counter-clockwise. This shouldn't require very much pressure and you should see the stuck disc slowly come out of its slot after a few twists.

Step 4: Put It Back Together

Pull the disc out and and then retighten the screw. Place the cover back on, plug in all the cords, and get ready to enjoy your PS4... again.

Last Resort Options

If one of the methods above worked for you, make sure you're running the latest version of the PlayStation software before putting another disc in. If neither worked for you, you may have to send it in to Sony for repairs, or contact PlayStation Support for more information.

I just unplugged the charger for the controller from the unit. The disc popped right out.

What always works on my PS3 is to slide another disc into the cd tray. It seems to push the stuck disc onto the tray making it available to eject. Don't put the second disc all the way in though

Tried the first option listed here, didn't work. Shockingly what did work was quickly pressing the eject button on the system three or four times. Not sure if this is really a way to force an eject, or if I just got super lucky.

I did your cd trick. Worked on the first shot! and much less time thanks!!

I just turned it on its side and lighty smacked the side of the cd port while pressing the eject button and it came right out. Guess I just dislodged it

Thank you, cant believe i never thought of that.

The first option worked but then it did it again got suck can anyone help me

My grand daughter 3 years old unfortunately slid in a sony ps2 hand held game disk. Into a PS4 slim machine . The Disk is a tiny disk compared to the standard disk slipped it into my sons gf PS4. It only took as second plz help

It won't come out ?

Second Method worked. Screw was a bit hard to find but a flashlight will help you.

Not recommending this until you've tried the safe methods: turned it vertically and lightly tapped the bottom area where the tray is located and it popped out. Whew!

I've tried both the manual eject options to remove a stuck disc in my sons PS4 but neither worked? Any suggestions what to do next? Thanks

Thank you so much! The first method worked perfectly!

Well this doesn't help, I have a slim. It would really help if there were instructions for the slim version.

If you can't spell compensation the online community is much richer from the lack of you

The counter Clockwise method worked however we needed to hold the machine vertically while turning the screw counter clockwise.

Couldn't find the screw at first, turns out it was hidden under some dust. Once I found the screw, turned it And dvd came out. Thank you!

Turned the screw counter clockwise and it didnt "turn the disk out" but we turned the screw and hit the eject button it worked.

Turned the screw counter clockwise. The CD did come out. Tried to tighten the screw again. It keeps rotating and the console doesn't suck the cd. It goes inside the console when I turn the screw clockwise and comes out when I turn counter clockwise. The console doesn't read the CD at all. Can you help?

The first one worked!! Thank you so much, I was super worried
